The practical differences
- Holding versus moving
- Yoga generally settles into a shape and breathes there. Reformer generally repeats a controlled movement a set number of times.
- Equipment
- Yoga needs a mat. Reformer needs a sprung bed, which is why one is cheap and the other isn’t.
- What it emphasises
- Broadly, yoga leans towards flexibility, balance and breath. Reformer leans towards strength, alignment and control. They overlap a great deal.
- What comes with it
- Many yoga traditions carry a philosophical or meditative side. Pilates doesn’t. It’s an exercise method with no belief system attached.
If a yoga class has ever asked you for flexibility you haven’t got, you’ll find the reformer more forgiving.
Which will suit you
If you want to feel calmer, stretch more and work on stillness, yoga is probably your thing. If you want to feel stronger, understand how you’re moving and work against something you can measure, reformer is.
That mind-body feeling people love in yoga is genuinely there in reformer work too. It just arrives through concentrating on precise movement rather than through being still.
