If you’re not flexible

Do I need to be flexible to do reformer Pilates?

No. Flexibility is something that tends to come with time, not something you need before you walk in. The springs and straps mean we set every exercise to the range you actually have today, rather than the range a photograph suggests you ought to have.

Start whereyou are

Where the worry comes from

Nearly every photograph of Pilates online shows somebody folded into an extraordinary shape. It’s a terrible advert for what the practice is actually like, and it puts off exactly the women who’d get the most out of starting.

A real class looks far more ordinary than that. Small, controlled movements, done well, over and over.

We work with the range you’ve got today. It tends to change on its own, without ever being forced.

How the bed helps

The straps hold your arm or leg up for you through a movement, so you can work at a comfortable range without straining to hold a position you can’t yet hold.

And the springs can be set to help you rather than resist you. That’s a real advantage over working on a mat, where gravity is the only setting on offer.

Start whereyou aretoday

If you can’t reach something, that’s just information for us, not a problem for you to solve by pushing harder. We’ll change the set-up. Stiff mornings, tight hamstrings and shoulders that don’t much fancy going overhead are all completely ordinary in a room like ours.

Common questions

Will it make me more flexible?

Working regularly through a controlled range does tend to change how freely you move over time. How much and how quickly varies from person to person.

I can’t touch my toes. Is that a problem?

Not remotely, and you’d be in very good company. Mention it and we’ll set the exercises up to suit you.

Which class should I choose if I feel stiff?

Foundations. It moves at a pace that gives you time to find each position rather than hurrying you between them.
