Why do I need grip socks?

They’ve got rubber on the sole, which stops your feet sliding on the carriage and the foot-bar. Ordinary socks slip, and slipping while you’re pushing against a moving platform isn’t safe. They also keep shared equipment clean.

Gripsocks

What they’re actually for

A lot of the class involves pressing your feet into the foot-bar and moving a carriage that slides. If your foot slips just as you’re pushing, you lose control of the carriage. Grip socks take that worry away almost entirely.

They matter just as much for the exercises where you kneel or stand on the carriage itself, which is padded and upholstered and properly slick under a plain sock.

What to look for

Grip across the whole sole
Rubber dots or strips covering the ball and the heel, not just a small patch under your toes.
A snug fit
A loose sock slides around inside itself, which rather defeats the point. Size down if you’re between sizes.
Open or closed toe
Either is fine. Some people like a toeless pair for a better feel of the foot-bar. Entirely up to you.

Ours aren’t ready yet

[CONFIRM: VEA grip socks aren’t in stock, so we don’t sell them. Any pair from a sports shop will do perfectly well. We’ll update this if that changes.]

Common questions

Where do I get grip socks?

Most sports shops and online retailers sell them, often labelled as Pilates or yoga socks. Any pair with rubber across the sole will do.

Can I borrow a pair at the studio?

[CONFIRM: whether we keep spare pairs.] For now, please bring your own.

Do they wear out?

The rubber does flatten after a lot of washing. When you start to feel yourself sliding, it’s time for a new pair.
